On October 24, Professor Deborah Brautigam of Johns Hopkins University, presented a MillerComm lecture titled, “China In Africa: Stripping Away the Myths.” Professor Brautigam’s talk, which was attended by an overflow crowd at the Spurlock Museum, outlined China’s increasing presence in various African countries and assessed the extent and effectiveness of Chinese investment, trade, aid and political activity on the continent.

In addition to her MillerComm lecture, Professor Brautigam also gave a talk to community members who are involved in the Urbana Sino-Africa Sister Cities initiative.

Ashley Sheriff, a grad student in African Studies and Library Science, wrote an insightful blog posting on Professor Brautigam’s visit and that of another scholar in the same area, USC Professor Ching Kwan Lee, who spoke at U of I a week earlier.
